Gracie Barra Wolverhampton’s white belt army stepped up on Friday evening to defend the Red Shield and put themselves against competitors from across the country and beyond. Some fantastic displays of Jiujitsu, heart and determination. Ajit demonstrating awesome guard retention skills, big Dal submitting his first opponent in his first ever competition, Stuart scoring an incredible takedown within the first 20 seconds of his match, Jermaine showcasing his excellent determination and drive to win, and Big Daz once again dropping down 4 (yes FOUR) age divisions to do battle with the young guns.
What an awesome night, some frustration, some nerves but great team spirit and support – with professor Nathan managing to watch all the fights between refereeing duties.
Sunday up stepped Coach Christian, carrying a few injuries, into the Brown Belt lightweight division – not that you could tell with a swift submission by kneebar of his first opponent and winning the final with a strategic points victory to claim the GOLD for the second consecutive year. Awesome result.
Competition is just a small strand of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu lifestyle – but a very strong strand in the lineage of Gracie Barra. So proud of all our competitors and their achievements.
